Woyzeck
Wozzeck feels disconnected from things. Yet in spite of this missing sense of connection, he is tightly bound and restrained. This inspired the idea for a structure whose wires and steel rods are cast firmly in the foundation yet lead nowhere. Eventually the situation topples just as the walls of the installation tilt, turning the floor into a wall. The accompanying sound consists of various noises and factors that rush Wozzeck along in his life. The steel rods generate a magnetic field that changes when someone enters the installation or touches one of the rods, causing the sounds to increase in volume and frequency, enhancing the feeling of being rushed.

Modern urban regions are full of cameras that are supposed to represent security and, above all, enable surveillance. It is the perspective of power, the view from above on that which is below. Yet what exactly is below? People going about their more or less daily activities and routes, transforming the places to spaces. Their steps tell stories. Each attempt to map or chronicle these stories seems in vain, for it requires us to ignore the perspective of those who are walking, and the immediacy of their actions gets lost in the recording. The City – Passersby retains these people’s perspective, provides a glimpse at their stories and directs our attention to the details of their travels. It is the search for a camera that does not retain the surveillance perspective which would deprive the beholder of an overview.

In her film, Eva Könnemann reveals the essence of theatrical work: the rehearsal process. Director Nikola Duric of “Showcase Beat le Mot” is slated to stage “Danton’s Death”. However, before victory can be achieved he must survive the struggle. How can an ensemble create revolutionary theatre if they have difficulties finding common ground?

Projects by the Hessian Theatre Academy
Büchner the researcher and practitioner, the scholar and tester – Büchner the “twen”. Who could be closer to him than the young academics of the Hessian Theatre Academy (HTA)? All of Hessen’s university are joining in: Students of the Institute for Applied Theatre Studies in Giessen are contributing a scenic discourse and installations spread throughout the entire city; young dramaturgs from Frankfurt Goethe University are honing their intermediation skills and will provide their services as hosts to international guests; students from the Offenbach University of Art and Design are presenting spaces and performances that echo Alban Berg’s Büchner-based opera Wozzeck. And the Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts is chipping in with two productions of Lenz.
