ALTENBERG

Interactive space and sound installation with headphones

The Altenberg installation consists of hundreds of old postcards which have been pasted together to create a new, abstract landscape. As the beholder traverses this postcard landscape with the aid of a pointer, the sounds of various animals and nature ring out along with one of the five orchestral songs which Alban Berg composed based on postcard texts by Peter Altenberg and which were first performed in 1913. The recordings overlap, resulting in a sound collage made up of unidentifiable noises which allude to Wozzeck’s paranoid perception of nature. Peter Altenberg was an Austrian author and an ardent collector. He owned thousands of postcards, which he used to paper the walls of the hotel room where he lived.

The anatomist penetrates deep into the body to unravel the mystery of life. He dissects the world into individual components to map their design in timeless images and fathom the inner principles of existence so that we may ultimately understand and position ourselves. The truth is hidden somewhere inside and is simply waiting for us to discover it. It will be revealed to us one day. What will we see

BREAKING NEWS

Installation

The transmission of news images without commentary or explanation poses a relatively novel form of television. Such “no comment” formats give audiences the feeling of directly experiencing events up close, making this type of broadcast seem more authentic than conventional media reporting. These uncommented images serve as the foundation of the multimedia-based installation Breaking News. The latest “no comment” reels have been scanned in to create seemingly “colourless” black-and-white images which are projected onto the walls of the showroom by means of rotating mirrors – generating an atmospheric “shadow world of current events”.

When the people involved in a revolutionary movement begin to speak in public and appear in the media, they assume a very specific demeanour. Their gestures and behavioural patterns imply victory despite the fact that these people are not yet victors. And then there are videos that suddenly emerge in world media as proof of a certain event which eventually turn into an event themselves. Television Is with Us reverses the origination of these moments by preceding the images with a script that provides directions about how the decisive moments should go. The participants become performers in their own lives; the script dictates the images. What happens in between?

Interactive space and sound installation

This sound sculpture, named after Woyzeck’s son, reacts to the visitor’s movements. Like a loaded automatic weapon that fires uncontrollably, it shoots sounds “until the last person has stopped moving”. A panicked scream that abruptly calls out and then falls silent again in loneliness – a scream from Woyzeck’s world.

The mountains are enchanting, only God knows how to combine so much beauty with so many horrors. Nature is an intricate web of experience. Nature is not one, but many, doubled, beautiful, dreadful, poised and deceiving. Its images are pairs of contrasts, colour gradients, projections. Our senses relish in its exaltedness, yet are also paralysed by it. The world is aflame. If only we could see it!
